There’s always something to learn at the Newfane Historical Society. They preserve the Van Horn Mansion, and facilitate organizations such as the Civil War Reenactors Club and Festival Committee. Visit their website to see all you can experience.
The Newfane Free Library has been our community’s gateway to knowledge for over a century with rentals, book clubs, free seminars and classes as well as charity drives.
History you can visit.
On June 20, 1888, Olcott pioneers began erecting a log cabin in Krull Park. It was opened and dedicated on August 8 of that same year at the Pioneer’s Picnic Days, when the public had an opportunity to see how earlier settlers lived.
It was a popular stop for local families and visitors to Olcott because of its importance as a place for historical relics. It also showed off log ends with inscriptions of those who helped to build the cabin.
Unfortunately by August of 1956, the log cabin was in disrepair. A large number of relics were stolen and what remained was taken to the Niagara County Historical Society Museum.
Thanks to a grant from the Niagara River Greenway in March 2015,
The cabin was rebuilt. In June 2017, the Ye Olde Log Cabin once again re-opened its door to visitors. The cabin is open on Friday through Sunday from noon to 5 p.m., June 1 through Sept. 9.

To raise the remainder of the $40,000, the Ye Olde Log Cabin Committee will be selling personalized log ends, which will eventually be displayed in the cabin, just like before. An eight-inch log, with up to 45 characters including spaces and punctuation, is $150, and a 10-inch log with up to 52 characters is $300.
You can purchase a log end for yourself, your family, children, or loved one, by sending a check to the Town of Newfane and note that it is for the Log Cabin project. Just contact us.
